CLEVELAND, Ohio — Northeast Ohio residents are in for a steamy and potentially stormy weekend, as the National Weather Service in Cleveland warns of strong to severe thunderstorms and dangerously high heat index values expected to impact much of the region through Saturday night.
The Hazardous Weather Outlook, issued early Saturday morning, includes nearly three dozen counties across Northwest, North Central and Northeast Ohio, including major cities such as Cleveland, Toledo, Akron and Canton. Forecasters say storms could become intense, with damaging wind gusts being the primary threat, NWS said.
In addition to the risk of severe weather, forecasters warn that a hot and humid airmass will grip the region through the afternoon and early evening. Heat index values are expected to climb to between 95 and 100 degrees.
That dangerous heat on Saturday has prompted the National Weather Service to place most of Ohio under a Level 3 out of 4 “major risk,” according to the experimental HeatRisk chart.
The NWS is urging residents to stay alert, monitor updates and take precautions, especially when working outdoors, traveling or planning outdoor events. Heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke are possible with prolonged exposure.
Scattered thunderstorms could bring power outages, downed trees and heavy rain. According to the NWS, the threat may linger into the night, especially for areas east of Interstate 71.
