The family of the serial killer has overcome the requirements demanded by the Ninth Prosecutor’s Office, Cesar section. Now, the National Institute of Legal Medicine is creating obstacles to deliver the body.

The entity insists on carrying out this procedure with a direct relative of Garavito.
This situation delays the final destiny of the criminal’s remains, considering that Garavito’s maternal nephew, Jahir Gómez, authorized his attorney, Gabriel Alfonso Beltrán, for these purposes.
«After so many procedures, the Prosecutor’s Office ordered the body of Garavito to be delivered to the family. Through a power of attorney, I am authorized to claim and cremate it. For Legal Medicine, this document is not valid. It is concerning, because in law, powers of attorney are granted for this type of situations,» emphasized the lawyer.
Another difficulty that the family faces is the delivery of the convict’s personal belongings by the authorities of the High and Medium Security Prison, better known as ‘La Tramacúa’ in Valledupar, the place where Garavito has been incarcerated since September 12, 2002.
«We presented the required documents to the penitentiary, but they refuse to deliver Garavito’s belongings,» detailed Beltrán.

Luis Alfredo Garavito, the murderer and rapist of nearly 200 children in Colombia, died on October 12th at the Santo Tomás Clinic in Valledupar. Since then, the body has remained at the National Institute of Legal Medicine in the capital of Cesar.
For Garavito’s family, what is happening is absurd. They demand that the relevant procedures for the cremation of the body be accelerated.
«I was not allowed to see Garavito’s body, verify that everything is in order. They have also not given us the results of the autopsy. In the prison, Garavito’s diaries, documents, photos, notebooks are still there. It is absurd what is happening,» emphasized the lawyer.

The process of delivering and cremating the body of the serial killer is being led by the regional Ombudsman, José Hernández, in coordination with Tatiana Barriga, the regional liaison for penitentiary affairs.
«Since Garavito’s death, we have been accompanying his family with the relevant institutions. So far, we have encountered many obstacles, as the authorities always find a justification for not delivering the body. It is difficult to understand because all legal and administrative resources have been exhausted,» highlighted the delegate.
