Emma Watson famously had to wear fake teeth in one scene of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that something was off about Watson’s teeth during the final scene of the movie. Interestingly, the false teeth story wasn’t revealed until years later when Chris Columbus explained how the movie did away with one weird choice.
Columbus and his team always wanted to make a film that was as close to J.K. Rowling‘s work as possible. Interestingly, it was not always possible to make that happen, as Columbus revealed in Entertainment Weekly’s Binge podcast in 2016. Rowling’s description of Hermione Granger was that she had bushy hair and large front teeth.
However, the young Emma Watson had normal teeth for a 10-year-old. Columbus shared that Hermione’s teeth were a big thing in the books, and he wanted to bring the same to the screen. He decided to make her wear fake teeth in the scene. However, they quickly realized that Watson couldn’t go through the whole movie with the false teeth. Columbus shared:
The thing we shot on the first day of Sorcerer’s Stone was the final train sequence where Harry looks at Hogwarts and Emma, Dan [Radcliffe], and Rupert [Grint] are huddled outside of the train. It was a big thing in the books about [Hermione’s] teeth.
She sort of had an overbite, so [Emma’s] wearing fake teeth in that scene. And I realized that she’s never going to be able to perform with these huge fake teeth in her mouth for the rest of the movie. So if you look closely, you can see some fake teeth.
Interestingly, the books made Hermione’s character lose her big teeth in The Goblet of Fire. After Draco Malfoy cast a spell to make her front teeth grow larger, the counter spell returned her teeth to a smaller size than they had originally been. It was almost impossible to make Watson wear prosthetic teeth from movies one to four.

According to Europe Dental Clinics, the actress had a slightly crooked teeth as a young teen when she started on the Wizarding World movies. Experts could notice that she had the minor unevenness in her front teeth when she innocently smiled, which many found to be endearing.
However, experts believed that she started taking steps towards refining her smile. It was assumed that her orthodontic treatment probably involved the actress wearing braces around the ages of 14 to 15. She could’ve easily wore them in between filming her movies. According to the experts, this could’ve straightened her teeth and corrected her bite alignment.
The experts noted that her teeth appeared more straighter and healthier as she appeared in the movies in the late 2000s. After her Harry Potter stint ended, experts noticed that an adult Watson now had a perfect smile, with uniformly aligned bright white teeth. They noticed how the Beauty and the Beast actress’s smile looked visibly flawless.
Dental experts claimed that she appeared to have received porcelain veneers to make her teeth in shape and whiter. According to Europe Dental Clinics, veneers are thin ceramic coverings that improved the appearance of the teeth. It closed the gaps in teeth and gave them a permanent white coloration.
It was also reported that she may have undergone other teeth whitening treatments, like professional bleaching or high-quality at-home whitening. The cosmetic fixes gave her the ‘Hollywood smile’, which many celebrities aspire for in the industry. The experts pointed out that her teeth still looked natural and authentic, despite the work done on them.

The reports of Emma Watson getting a cosmetic surgery emerged in the mid-2020s after she had a glow-up after her Harry Potter stint. Experts have not only pointed out the possible use of porcelain veneers, but some have also commented on her changed facial structure. However, many others disputed this rumor, sharing that the changes in her face was attributed to growing up.
In 2017, Watson revealed her beauty secrets with Into The Gloss, detailing her routine which included many natural and sustainable items. The actress shared about how she embraced her freckles more after she entered adulthood. She shared:
The object for me when applying makeup is you should be able to see as much skin as possible. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve embraced my freckles much more and I want to be able to see them. When we were filming Beauty and the Beast, I insisted on keeping my freckles as a part of the movie.
There are so many young girls who are going through puberty who really hate having them, so I felt the need to say that I have them and that I think the look of natural skin is beautiful. I didn’t want to get blanked out!
Watson touched upon how everyone was forced to edit their life for the Instagram era. She shared, “There’s still so much shame around the things you do to get ready while you’ve got a towel wrapped around your head. It’s important to me not to edit that out.” She further shared intimate details about her makeup routine, sharing:
I’ve been bleaching my top lip since I was nine. I don’t do it very often, but I do it! There’s that, and I use Fur Oil. I’ll use that anywhere from the ends of my hair to my eyebrows to my pubic hair. It’s an amazing all-purpose product.
She shared that she doesn’t frequently wear nail polish, but added that she loved “having my toenails crazy colors.” She further shared that her favorite perfume was the “first perfume my dad bought me when I was 11 or 12”, adding that she couldn’t find it anywhere anymore.
