Video captures man attempting to run over worker at Pearl City bar

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A man was arrested for attempted murder after he tried to ram a worker with his vehicle outside a Pearl City bar, and it was caught on camera.

The video shows a 33-year-old man driving his vehicle towards another man outside the parking lot of Club Hot Ash.

HPD said, at around 8 p.m. Saturday, the suspect initially fled the scene but returned shortly after and intentionally attempted to run over the victim. The 26-year-old victim jumped onto the suspect’s hood to avoid being hit, but he fell off.

Police said the 33-year-old then reversed and hit multiple parked vehicles, which caused the victim to be pinned between them.

“I’m really shocked, I mean, I’ve never encountered something like this, but it’s really spooky. It’s good that it’s daytime, but I wouldn’t come at night,” she said.

The incident stems from the suspect allegedly speeding out of the parking lot.

A worker at the bar said the suspect nearly hit a dog that belongs to one of the workers.

That’s when an employee threw a chair towards the vehicle. The suspect then drove off, but returned and tried to plow into the worker before fleeing.

Police said the suspect hit multiple vehicles and pinned the victim between two cars. He sustained minor injuries and is currently in good condition.

Pearl City resident Stephen Paresa said, “there’s no place safe anymore in Pearl City, and that’s scary.”

Paresa and his wife, Mika Cabinte, said they are seeing more crimes in Pearl City.

“I wouldn’t feel safe walking around at night, now, even as a grown-up,” Cabinte said. “Back then, I would feel safe. Like growing up as kids, we’d play outside all day, and we would come home when it (was) dark. I wouldn’t let my kids do that.”

Police later located the suspect and arrested him for second-degree attempted murder. Charges will be sought with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney.

The worker we spoke with, who declined an interview, said the suspect did not have a drink at the bar, but was unsure whether he drank beforehand.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call 911 immediately or contact CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300.
