Tour de France 2025 Stage 10 Preview: Into The Mountains

If you’re a fan of all things sports, there’s no way Stage 9 of the Tour de France 2025 didn’t have you on the edge of your seat with your heart pumping.

Teammates Mathieu van der Poel and Jonas Rickaert rode free from the start and were well out in front for more than 170 or the 174.1 kilometers, but they were swallowed up in the final meters, with Tim Merlier edging Jonathan Milan in a sprint finish in “Cavendish City.”

The stage ended the way anyone would’ve expected – with a sprint into the line in Châteauroux, where Mark Cavendish claimed three of his record 35 Tour de France stage victories.

But no one could’ve predicted what Van der Poel nearly pulled off. The immediate attack was a brave surprise, and had the stage been a kilometer shorter, they would’ve succeeded.

For much of the day, it looked like Van der Poel could win his second stage of the 2025 TDF and take the yellow leader’s jersey for the third time in nine stages.

Instead, it was Merlier and Milan, followed by Arnaud De Lie, Pavel Bittner and Paul Penhoet.

The yellow jersey remains on the shoulders of defending champion Tadej Pogacar, who leads Remco Evenepoel (54 seconds) and local star Kevin Vauquelin (1 minute, 11 seconds).

Now, what better way is there to celebrate Bastille Day (the national day of France) than with a challenging mountain stage of the Tour de France, rather than with parades and a rest day?

Don’t worry, though, the first of this year’s two rest days will follow, and it will be hard-earned after 10 straight days of action.

For viewers in Canada, FloBikes coverage of Stage 10 will begin at 7 a.m. Eastern and is expected to conclude around 12:05 p.m. EDT.

Stage 10: Tour de France 2025

Stage 10 of the Tour de France 2025 is the first mountain stage of the year and the last challenge before a well-earned rest day.

The 165.3-kilometer ride from Ennezat to Le Mont-Dore includes eight categorized climbs – seven Category 2 and one Category 3 – which means they are no joke, along with some other tough elevation.

The final one will be a 3.5-kilometer climb to Le Mont-Dore that averages 8% gradient and will bring the day’s upward progress to 4,400 meters.

There’s no doubt Stage 10 will be an opportunity for the climbing specialists to gain time, while the relentless trajectory could crack some other contenders. The title likely won’t be decided on this stage, especially will 11 days of racing to go, but it certainly can be lost on this one.

As always, 10, 6 and 4 bonus seconds will be awarded to the first three finishers.
