‘Severe’ delays following a four vehicle crash on motorway

An accident is reported to have taken place at around 4pm on Friday, July 11, on a stretch of the M6 Northbound in Wigan, between junction 26 in Orrell and junction 27 in Standish.

With emergency services rushing to the scene, one lane has been closed due to the accident.

Severe delays and traffic congestion have been reported, with queues backing up for around seven miles and to junction 24 in Ashton-in-Makerfield.

Traffic monitoring website INRIX also reports that it is slow on the southbound carriageway as “onlookers slow to view”.

The North West National Highways organisation has reported that delays have been in excess of an hour for motorists travelling on the M6 Northbound.

Shortly after 6pm, the North West National Highways reported that all lanes have now been opened, although delays of up to 40 minutes remain with approximately 4 miles of congestion.
