Rafael Devers Trade Has Been Surprising Bust For Both Red Sox & Giants

It’s been two weeks since the Boston Red Sox shocked the baseball world by trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants for two pitchers and two prospects.

The move made sense for both clubs at the time, as the Red Sox wanted to fortify their pitching staff and the Giants sought a big bat to bolster their lineup.

Surprisingly, both teams have struggled since the deal, turning a potential win-win move into a lose-lose so far.

Both teams have gone 4-8 in their first 12 games since the trade, dropping multiple games in the standings.

That only makes sense for one team

Boston has lost seven of its last eight games as its offense has disappeared, averaging just 3.83 runs per game without Devers compared to 4.84 runs per game with him. The Red Sox have gone from three games over .500 to three games below .500 in the span of 10 days, falling eight games behind the New York Yankees in the American League East and three games out of a playoff spot.

Meanwhile, Devers has not provided San Francisco the offensive jolt it was looking for. The three-time All-Star has slumped out West, batting .217/.333/.391 with just two homers, five RBI and more strikeouts (17) than hits (10).

Devers has provided 0.0 fWAR for his new team, which is averaging fewer runs per game with him (3.33) than without him (4.29). The Giants have lost five of their last six games, slipping from second to third in the National League West and falling a season-high 7 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Both teams are on shaky ground as June comes to a close. Boston’s playoff odds have dropped from 31.0% to 14.5%, according to FanGraphs, while San Francisco’s odds have plunged from 64.4% to 41.9%.

While the trade’s initial returns haven’t been great, both teams are hoping to see more impact from it in the second half. Jordan Hicks is expected to make his Red Sox debut this week out of the bullpen, while Kyle Harrison will likely join the rotation later this summer.

As for Devers, his bat should start heating up once he gets more settled with the Giants. July has also been his best month historically in terms of all three triple slash stats (.322/.383/.625).

Given the prospects involved and Devers’ contract, this trade will take years to fully evaluate. However, it’s safe to say the last few weeks probably haven’t gone as either side expected.
