Cops confirmed one man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
Officers arrested a driver, a man aged in his 50s, at the scene for causing serious injury by careless driving and is in police custody.
Blocks were put in place between junctions four and five, with heavy queues building.
It’s estimated motorists could face delays until around midnight.
One person stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic fumed on social media: “Been here for hours without food. Can you get a message out to the stuck drivers please! Are you expecting us to wait here until 1am?”
Another caught up in the disruption added: “Tens of thousands of people have been trapped for over one and a half hours in this closure.
“Open one lane and let us through? What about everyone’s wellbeing? Investigate and blame someone later!”
A Herts., Police spokesperson said: “We are advising motorists to avoid the M1 southbound between junctions five and four whilst we deal with a serious road traffic collision.
“The road is expected to remain closed for some time so please take an alternative route.”
In an update, the force confirmed: “We were called at 6.52pm this evening to a collision involving three vehicles between junctions 4 and 5 southbound on the M1 motorway.
“One man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
“One driver, a man aged in his 50s, was arrested at the scene for causing serious injury by careless driving and is in police custody.
“The road was closed southbound whilst investigations took place and remains closed at this time.
“If anyone witnessed the collision they are asked to contact us. You can report information online at herts.police.uk/report, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat at herts.police.uk/contact or call the non-emergency number 101, quoting ISR 663 of 9 July.
“If you have dash cam footage in relation to the collision, please upload this at: herts.police.uk/dashcamupload.”
This comes after we reported a massive M60 closure this week following a shocking crash between eight lorries and cars on Monday.
The busy motorway, which surrounds Manchester, was shut in both directions across two days after four lorries and four cars were involved in a major multi-vehicle collision.
Nine people were injured in the crash, which saw one of the HGVs shed its load of beer barrels onto the motorway.
Another lorry broke through the central reservation, and struck several street lights.
Ruptured fuel tanks were also reported in the collision, with diesel spilling onto the road on both sides of the carriageway.
