Katie Wilson takes a slight lead in Seattle mayoral race that is still too close to call

With each ballot drop, the two candidates vying for Seattle mayor are within a closer and closer margin of each other. Who will pull ahead?

SEATTLE — Katie Wilson took a 91-vote lead in a Seattle mayoral race that is still too close to call.

Wilson trailed incumbent and current Mayor Bruce Harrell until another ballot count was released Monday afternoon.

On Monday morning, King County Elections estimated there were around 45,000 ballots left to be counted, with many of those expected to be released on Monday afternoon.

A winner may not be named until every vote has been counted.

The votes that still need to be counted are mail-in ballots.

On election night, Harrell led by an eight-point margin. With each vote drop, Katie Wilson has been gaining ground. That was something her campaign expected would happen, as it did in the primaries.

In the City of Seattle, the more progressive candidates have been successful this election cycle. That would favor Wilson; however, Harrell believes his results in City Hall and his elected experience will carry him to victory.

Looking at voter turnout in this off-year election, statewide, just under 40% of registered voters returned their ballots.

A higher percentage of voters participated within King County, with about 45% participation. Within the city of Seattle, turnout citywide was at 46%.

A mandatory recount is triggered if the final margin is within 2,000 votes, which remains a very real possibility.
