After three somewhat encouraging games at the California Classic (a.k.a. Summer League’s summer league) the Summer Spurs move to Las Vegas for the annual extravaganza where all 30 NBA teams work out their young players and play a series of practice games for peanuts and the attention of hard core fans that are willing to watch hours of bad basketball just to catch a glimpse of a player that they are excited to see make their favorite team.
Tonight we should see the Spurs full summer league roster, with Dylan Harper finally joining the rest of the team on the court. [UPDATE: Harper and Edgecombe are both out tonight.] Carter Bryant has been pretty quiet so far in Summer League, but he’s had some fine moments and committed some hard fouls. David Jones-Garcia has been the best player so far for the squad, making a case for a training camp spot and maybe a two-way contract. If you buy all the way in, you could see him grabbing one of the final spots on the regular roster later in the season, but he hasn’t earned that yet.
Tonight, they play the Sixers, led by third overall pick VJ Edgecombe, who was impressive in the Salt Lake Summer League, scoring 28 against the Jazz, and sitting out the other two games. The marquee matchup tonight will be Harper vs Edgecombe, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Edgecombe score more points tonight after Harper has been sitting out for a while with a minor groin injury and could be a bit rusty at first. [UPDATE: probably Jalen Hood-Schifino vs David Jones-Garcia]
The Spurs play again on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 against the Mavericks, and everyone will be watching the matchup between Harper and the first overall pick Cooper Flagg.
Game Prediction:
No matter how well or poorly the Summer League Spurs play, fans will overreact, thinking that these practice games have some sort of significance far beyond a public workout for players hoping to make an NBA team.
