Northbound lanes of I-75 were shut down late Monday morning at the Kentucky–Tennessee state line due to multiple weather-related crashes, according to Kentucky State Police.

Emergency Management officials say it was caused when snow fell over a section of the interstate and the roadway quickly turned treacherous. It took hours to clear the scene and re open the roadway.

“Due to the nature of the vehicles, some of them being tractor trailers and trucks and a trailer with gravel, it took it a long time for it to be cleared up,” said Jerry Rains, who is the emergency management director for Laurel and Whitley Counties.

Officials say many of the crashes happened near a bridge, which is believed to have iced over before the roadway.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said it was near mile point 1.8. KYTC announced the road was back open around 2:30 Monday afternoon.
