Former Patriots QB Named Possible Fit For Dolphins In 2026

Former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has been enjoying a solid season as the backup for the San Francisco 49ers, with Brock Purdy dealing with a toe injury.

Jones has appeared in nine games, starting eight, throwing for 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The 49ers signed Jones to a two-year, $8.4 million contract this offseason, and with one season remaining, San Francisco could put Jones up for a trade.

In a recent USA Today article, Jacob Camenker highlighted potential teams that could trade for Jones, including the Miami Dolphins.

“The Dolphins can’t move off Tua Tagovailoa’s contract without eating a dead-cap hit of nearly $100 million next offseason, per Spotrac.com,” Camenker wrote on Monday. “Barring a trade, Miami will likely be stuck with the inconsistent lefty at least through the 2026 season, but the Dolphins will still almost certainly bring in competition for him.”

Jones would be a nice competition for Tagovailoa, and since he played in the AFC East for three seasons with New England, he knows what it takes to play the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets.

Jones will likely have a nice trade market this offseason, with many teams needing better quarterback upgrades.
