Flood watch issued with heavy rain on the way

The risk of flooding in Boston and much of Southern New England is the highest in months as moisture from what was once Tropical Storm Chantal will converge with a passing front Tuesday afternoon, sparking showers and thunderstorms across the region.

The atmosphere is primed for a storm day. Dew points in the 70s will make the air light and unstable for the front to lift vertically, spawning storms. The concern is that some of these storms may pack a punch with heavy downpours to torrential rain possible Tuesday afternoon and evening, along with gusty winds from the sudden downbursts of rain.

There is a chance of flash flooding on Tuesday afternoon with rainfall rates up to 2 inches per hour, setting up difficult driving conditions and ponding of water on roadways and low-lying areas.
