Federal authorities to announce major indictment in press release today

AUBURN, Ala. (WTVM) – Federal authorities executed search warrants across six counties in east and central Alabama as part of a fraud and drug investigation.

Authorities say the raids are connected to a federal indictment against Cesar Campos Reyes, who is now considered a fugitive. Reyes is facing four counts each of bank fraud and wire fraud, along with a charge of money laundering.

According to the indictment, Reyes fraudulently obtained Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans by falsely certifying documents tied to restaurants that were raided during the operation. Investigators say the loan funds totaling around $225,000 were used for illegitimate purposes.

During the execution of the warrants, law enforcement uncovered distribution levels of methamphetamine, powder cocaine, crack cocaine, pills, and at least 20 firearms, and a sum of money.

Three other individuals were arrested. Two were charged with harboring undocumented immigrants and another was charged in connection with controlled substances.

Authorities say agents encountered more than 40 undocumented individuals during the raids, who were detained by immigration officials.

The operation was a joint effort involving both federal and state agencies.

Reyes is believed to be a resident of Lee County. Anyone who sees him or has information on his whereabouts is urged to contact law enforcement.
