It’s to be a summer of movies for local families who can cash in over the holidays on some great deals on favourite films. No sooner has popular outdoor cinema Screen on the Green made a return to Newcastle than city multiplex Cineworld is offering family specials too.

As previously reported, NE1 Screen on the Green – which is currently showing sports in Old Eldon Square, with the Tour de France following on from Wimbledon – will be hosting a whole summer of free family films starting on July 21. Those wanting even more options might like to know that Cineworld Newcastle also will be showing a pick of children’s films – this time for just £1 a ticket from July 25 until August 28.

The cinema chain, whose Newcastle branch is at The Gate, says its £1 Family Films offer will run weekly and will apply to selected 2D films, which will include children’s favourites Moana 2 and Paddington in Peru. The idea is to make cinema more accessible over the summer and the chain says it also has Cineworld Munchbox and Family Special snacks offers.

Stuart Crane, international vice-president of film content at Cineworld, said the deal is an opportunity for families to see a film they may have missed or one which they want to see again. “Summer holidays are made for being more childish together as a family,” he said, adding: “It’s all about sharing those moments of joy that bring everyone closer and keeping that playful spirit alive all summer long.”
