Blue Line train stuck under Boston Harbor; 500 passengers evacuated, officials say

Hundreds of subway passengers were led out of a tunnel beneath Boston Harbor after a Blue Line train became stuck due to a power outage Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The MBTA said a downed communications wire in the tunnel between Aquarium and Maverick stations was reported about 2:30 p.m.

About 465 passengers were escorted out of the tunnel by the Boston Fire Department, Transit Police, and the MBTA, the T said. The fire department said it evacuated 500 passengers from the train, which took about an hour.

No injuries were reported and the train remains in the tunnel, the MBTA said.

In a social media post shortly after 3 p.m., the MBTA said shuttle buses were running in place of Blue Line train service between Government Center and Airport stations due to a signal issue at Aquarium station. The buses will not service Bowdoin station, the T said.

The SL3 bus between Airport and South Station is running with free fares as is the East Boston Ferry between Aquarium and Maverick, the T said on social media.
