Iconic filmmaker Tim Burton recently discussed his next project during a visit to Mexico City. The Batman (1989) director went to the capital of Mexico for the inauguration of a labyrinth based on his work.
Tim Burton’s next project is an animated movie
Burton visited Mexico City for the opening of a labyrinth inspired by the projects he has been part of over the years. During an interview with the local outlet Milenio, Burton spoke about his next project after Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Notably, released in 2024, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice serves as a sequel to 1988’s Beetlejuice. The movie was a critical and commercial success. It currently has a 75% approval rating on the review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes after 367 reviews.
The Edward Scissorhands director revealed that he has been working on an animated project. Burton added, “So hopefully I’ll have a script soon, and take it from there. But it’s something I’m very excited about.”
The legendary filmmaker has previously made several other animated features, including 2005’s Corpse Bride and 2012’s Frankenweenie. He also co-produced 1993’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, a movie based on one of his poems. All three movies were developed using stop-motion technology.
Addressing an audience during his Mexico visit, Burton reflected on the role cemeteries play in his creative process. He said that he had found going to the cemeteries to be “very peaceful” and creative. He added, “It was a place that I used to go to think,” before noting that the time he spent there had a strong impact on his creative life.
At the time of this article’s composition, it remains unclear what that next project would be. According to several sites, his only upcoming project currently is Wednesday Season 2. Burton directed the first four episodes of the Netflix show and has helmed four more episodes in the upcoming sophomore season, which debuts in two equal parts on August 6, 2025, and September 3, 2025.
