Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s relationship is the gift that keeps on giving for young Wicked fans.
It’s no secret that many Gen Z and milllennials—55% according to 2023 research—say they are more invested in making strong friendships than forming romantic connections so having Grande and Erivo’s close bond dominate the pop culture news cycle, and not their respective romances, is everything.

So, all of that makes Erivo’s recent comments about their relationship and what’s next for them even sweeter. “This is a long-lasting friendship for us,” Erivo said during a November 20 interview on Today. “We’re kind of like sisters at this moment. And I think we’ve both learned from each other and given each other some really, really beautiful gifts. We’ve really looked after each other through this.”
Erivo, who is in a relationship with actress Lena Waithe, and Grande, who is dating Wicked co-star Ethan Slater, have certainly dealt with plenty of speculation about their romantic relationships but their friendship has gotten far more attention, proving what fans are really focused on.
At the November 17 premiere of the film’s second instalment, Grande expressed her “overwhelming gratitude” for the love she and Erivo have received throughout the past five years of bringing Wicked and Wicked: For Good into the world. “It’s been such an incredible ride and an incredible experience to create with people we love so much and respect so much creatively, but also who just have such great hearts,” she told E! News.
Fans caught a first glimpse of their friendship in November 2021 when they were named as the leads of the Wicked adaptation with each sharing the flowers and notes they received from one another on social media. “Pink goes with green,” Erivo’s note to Grande stated. “Congratulations, Miss A, the part was made for you. I look forward to sharing this mystical journey with you. Love, Cynthia.”
“Dear Cynthia, Honored doesn’t even begin to cover it,” Grande’s note read. “I cannot wait to hug you. See you in Oz. All my love, Ari.”
Since then, their love has dominated our screens and social media feeds, and it looks like there’s plenty more where that came from.
