Leopard Racing’s David Almansa claimed his best ever Moto3 qualifying result, after setting the second fastest lap in the rain at Sachsenring and securing a place on the front row of the grid for tomorrow’s GermanGP.
The Moto3 Q2 session was briefly halted with just under 12 minutes on the clock, after a crash for Guido Pini saw his bike hit and deflate the airfence. Once redeployed the session got back underway, where yellow flags in the closing stages cost several riders their fastest laps.
Almansa looked at home in the wet conditions, consistently keeping his name towards the top of the timing screens throughout Q2. He managed to time his runs just right to avoid the yellow flags that came out in the closing stages and ended the session in second place, his career best qualifying result in Moto3.
Team-mate Adrian Fernandez also looked strong in the conditions and held provisional pole once the session restarted after the red flag period. Unfortunately, Fernandez had several laps deleted due to the yellow flags and ultimately ended the session in sixth.
It was also a career best result for Eddie O’Shea (GRYD – MLav Racing), who had a good feeling for the wet circuit having come through Q1. The Brit kept himself in contention throughout Q2 and posted the ninth fastest lap, securing a place on the third row of the grid. Honda Team Asia’s Taiyo Furusato was also in Q2 but struggled to find speed and was 17th.
There were also struggles in the opening qualifying session for Nicola Carraro (Rivacold Snipers Team), Tatchakorn Buasri (Honda Team Asia), Riccardo Rossi (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Stefano Nepa (SIC58 Squadra Corse), who will start tomorrow’s race from 19th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd places respectively.
Lenoxx Phommara, who is making his debut standing in for the injured Luca Lunetta at SIC58 Squadra Corse, was only able to set one timed lap after crashing in Q1 and will line up 24th. Unfortunately, Vicente Perez (GRYD – MLav Racing) has withdrawn from the German round due to an injured right wrist.
Tomorrow’s 23-lap Moto3 race at the Sachsenring will take place at 11am local time tomorrow.
