Mitchell Starc takes fastest Test five-wicket haul, Scott Boland gets hat-trick as Australia beats West Indies

Scott Boland has taken the first Test hat-trick by an Australian man in 15 years as Mitchell Starc’s career-best, record-breaking six-wicket haul powered Australia to a massive victory in the third Test in Jamaica.

The West Indies were ultimately bowled out for 27, the second-lowest score in Test history, to lose by 176 runs.

Starc took his five-wicket haul in 15 balls, the fastest in history, including three in the opening over to leave the West Indies in tatters at 6-22 at tea.

Boland joined the fray after the break and grabbed his own slice of history in the 14th over, when he had Justin Greaves caught at second slip, trapped Shamar Joseph LBW, then clean bowled Jomel Warrican in successive deliveries.

It was the first Test hat-trick by an Australian since Rene Farrell against England in 2011, and the first by an Aussie male since Peter Siddle’s birthday hat-trick in the 2010 Gabba Ashes Test.

„He would’ve played so many more Test matches in another team, but every time he comes in he’s on the money,“ Starc said.

„He’s preparing all the time to play. This week he got his opportunity and showed what a wonderful Test bowler he is.“

The West Indies avoided the ignominy of the equal-lowest Test score in history when Sam Konstas fumbled a rolling ball at gully and allowed a single, but Starc clean bowled Jayden Seales with the next ball to finish the game and a 3-0 clean sweep for Australia.

Starc ended up with a career-best 6-9 off 7.3 overs in his 100th Test, being named player of the match and series for his efforts.

It was a remarkable turnaround considering the day started with not-out batter Cameron Green being bowled while shouldering arms to the first ball of the day.

His wicket for 42 started a procession of 4-22, with Alzarri Joseph taking 5-27 and Shamar Joseph 4-34, before the West Indian batters came out and capitulated in infinitely more spectacular fashion.

Starc started the rot when he nicked off John Campbell with the first ball of the innings, with Josh Inglis taking the catch in his role as a concussion substitute for Alex Carey..

Starc was on a hat-trick after closing out the opening over by trapping Kevlon Anderson LBW when the debutant left an in-swinger on middle stump, then clean bowled Brandon King with a similar delivery through the gate.

And, while he missed out on three wickets in three balls, Starc continued on his merry way in the fifth over by swinging another one into the pads of Mikyle Louis, who did not bother reviewing, before trapping Shai Hope in front, which was upheld on review.

Josh Hazlewood joined in with the wicket of captain Roston Chase, the fourth duck of the innings, as the West Indies were reeling at 6-11 after six overs.

Greaves top-scored with 11 before becoming the first of Boland’s trio of victims, with the innings racing to its conclusion after tea as the West Indies eclipsed the previous worst mark in the team’s history by 20 runs.

That’s where we’ll leave things!

What an unbelievable morning.

Records tumble as the West Indies are bowled out for 27.

Australia wins the match by 176 runs and the series 3-0.

Thank you so much for joining me, Jon and Simon for this ridiculous series.

We’ve had a ball.

The Ashes ain’t too far away…

Starc doesn’t ‚take work home‘

Starc is visibly squirming and laughing nervously as Ian Bishop tells him he’s a „wonderful human being.“

He’s telling ESPN how he has bucked the mean, angry fast bowler stereotype.

„I still want to be competitive and play a role but over the years I’ve found ways to switch off and almost not take home I guess, which has helped me in the mental side of things,“ Starc says.

„I may not get up in the face of people but I still love competing…find different ways at different times.“

Starc talks strategy

Starc is talking to ESPN about the minutia of his remarkable morning’s performance.

„My gameplan hasn’t really changed throughout my career,“ Starc says.

„It is to try and get that ball up there swinging at pace and attack the stumps.“

And he says it was the late, rather than pronounced. movement that wreaked havoc today.

„That ball was swinging pretty late – it wasn’t swinging a lot, but just swinging really late, which was obviously really hard to play as a batter,“ Starc says.

He says that his consistency has been the biggest improvement in his game, and he can thank colleagues Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins for that.

„I would say my consistency has come a long way,“ Starc says.

„I’ve grown up with two of the best exponents of consistency in Josh and Pat, so I’ve certainly learnt a lot from them over the years.“

Starc reflects on a ’special‘ but ‚uncomfortable‘ week

Famously shy, Starc is on ESPN and reflecting on a week in which he both played 100 Tests and claimed his 400th wicket.

„I guess I’ll reflect on a few things once I’m finished with the week – everything’s still sinking in at the moment.

„It’s very humbling to have played long enough to have a chance at a few milestones, things to reflect on when I’m finished playing but at the moment just reflecting on another good Test win.“

Starc isn’t delving too far into the sentimentality, but he does say it took him a long time to feel at home in Test cricket.

„Being good enough to play Test cricket certainly took me a long time to feel like I belonged so I was never going to let that opportunity slip.

„It has been an uncomfortable week but certainly very humbling to hear some messages.

„A special week, uncomfortable all the same but glad we had a good week as a team.“

He also took the 400th wicket of his Test match career.

Scott Boland then took a hat-trick not long after tea.

Cummins: ‚Today showed the real Mitchell Starc‘

Pat Cummins is glowing as he’s talking to Samuel Badree about a truly remarkable performance from Australia’s newest 100 Test player.

„When you talk about 100 Tests, you talk about resilience, skill and fitness and those sorts of things,“ Starc says.

„But today showed the real Mitchell Starc and what he can bring to a team, which is out of nowhere tearing opposition apart and winning a game for you.

„He does it consistently in any format and feel very lucky he’s on our team.“

Cummins reflects on a ‚mad‘ day’s cricket

The Australian captain is talking to ESPN, still clearly stunned by a ridiculous day of cricket.

He’s reflecting on the series as a whole.

„I mean this match was madness today, it seemed to be played in fast forward,“ Cummins says.

„Great series, every test match there was some testing moments where it felt like it could have gone either way.“

„But I’m really proud of the group, how they managed to find their way through those.“

Chase ‚heartbroken‘ by ground hog day collapse

Spare a moment’s thought for new West Indian captain Roston Chase.

What a horrific end to his debut series as skipper.

He’s talking to ESPN about his side’s almost-record-breaking nightmare innings.

„It’s heartbreaking, obviously to be in a position like that where we think we could have won the game and then come out and have that poor batting display“ Chase says.

„It’s been something that has been reoccurring for the whole series so that makes it even more disappointing.“

Starc full of praise for ‚amazing‘ Boland

This Test was the first time all four Aussie quicks had played in the same team.

Boland announced his re-introduction in quite a remarkable way – claiming a hat-trick in the dying moments of the third Test.

Starc is full of praise for his returning teammate.

„He’s amazing isn’t he?“ Starc tells ESPN.

„Gee, he would’ve played so many more Test matches in another team.

„But every time he comes in he’s on the money, like we saw this week with a hat-trick.

„He’s never far from the perfect length as soon as he comes in.

„This week he got his opportunity and showed what a fantastic Test bowler he is.“

Starc named player-of-the-match

No prizes for guessing that one.

Samuel Badree is talking to the man of the moment.

„It worked out pretty well for the week. It’s been a fantastic series – I think we’ve seen some difficult batting conditions throughout but fantastic series for us,“ Starc tells ESPN.

„It’s been a good few days, very enjoyable, so I go home with a big smile on my face.“

Badree is asking how the bowlers were able to wreak such havoc in broad daylight today.

„We didn’t think it would happen as quickly today until the sun went down a bit,“ Starc says.

„Whether it was the wind – it was pretty blustery out there.

„But I reckon our bowling attack has been pretty on the money.“

  • Starc struck next ball to end the game

Vision of Scott Boland’s hat-trick

Boland is talking to ESPN post game.

He’s perhaps speaking slightly understatedly.

„I was just trying to keep putting good balls in good areas,“ Boland says.

„Happy to start off well and get a couple wickets.“

Australia wins by 176 runs

What an absolutely ridiculous couple hours of cricket.

(AP)

Mitchell Starc became just the second bowler to take three wickets in the first over of a Test match innings, took his 400th career wicket, then completed the fastest ever five wicket haul in the format.

Scott Boland picked up a hat-trick after tea and the West Indies were bowled out for 27, the second lowest total in the history of Test match cricket.

Australia wins by 176 runs in the most bizarre of circumstances.

STARC HAS SIX! AUSTRALIA WINS!

Full, straight and fast, Jayden Seales swings at one that cannons into his stumps.

Fittingly, it is Mitchell Starc who adds the final exclamation point to a remarkable half day of cricket.

Starc’s figures of 6/9 are his best ever.

15th over: Starc looking to finish things off

The West Indies remain stuck on the lowest Test score of all time.

Starc is coming around the wicket to Joseph.

And a misfield gets them off the dreaded 26!

Sam Konstas lets one past him in the cordon and the batters get a single. Not a great morning for young Sammy K…

14th over: Boland continues after hat-trick

The West Indies are now 9-26.

The lowest Test match score of all time is 26.

What is happening out there?

Number 11 Jayden Seales manages to see off the first couple balls, fending and then playing and missing.

And swinging hard! He misses it completely.

That’s over.

SCOTT BOLAND HAS A HAT-TRICK!!!!

Oh my goodness!!!

What is happening out there!

Scott Boland becomes the 10th Australian to take a Test match hat-trick.

His third wicket is the best of the lot, bowling Jamel Warrican with one that angled in straight through the gate.

Australia are one wicket away!

14th over continued: Boland on a hat-trick

For the second time today, an Australian has a chance at a hat-trick…

1h agoMon 14 Jul 2025 at 9:13pm

BOLAND HAS TWO!

And sure enough, the decision is overturned.

That was always likely to be the case, Shamar Joseph looked absolutely dead in the water.

Boland has two in two and is on a hat-trick!
