Ben Healy becomes virtual yellow jersey at the Tour de France

Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) has made the breakaway again at the Tour de France today and the group had gained so much time that it put the Irishman in the virtual yellow jersey on the road.

With just over 66.4km to go to on stage 10 toi Le Mont-Dore Puy de Sancy, the breakaway’s gap was up to 3:56 on the main peloton containing yellow jersey Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG).

Healy – who took an epic victory on stage 6 – had started the stage 11th overall at 3:55. And the time gained on the road today nudged the Irish rider into the ‘virtual yellow jersey’.

That essentially means when the general classification is calculated as the stage is still underway, a rider up ahead has gained enough to time put him into the leader’s ‘virtual’ yellow jersey.

However, while that’s a pretty cool moment for Healy, and for Irish cycling, there is a long way to go in the stage at the time of writing, even though the gap between the Healy breakaway and bunch had reach 5:00, putting him into ‘virtual yellow’ by a distance.

Healy has his team mates, Neilson Powless and Harry Sweeny, in the breakaway with him, helping him drive the pace on. That means the breakaway has a real chance of making it all the way to the finish.

However, whether they will have enough of a gap at the end of the stage to put Healy into yellow is more open to question.
