‘House of the Dragon’ Just Ended a 14-Year ‘Game of Thrones’ Record

The Emmy nominations have been announced and we can all begin to look forward to September, when the awards will be handed out. One of the biggest winners, nomination-wise, has been HBO Max, with the streaming service netting 142 nominations spread out over twenty series, movies, and miniseries. One of the jewels in the streamer’s crown over the years has been the Westeros-based Game of Thrones series, which ended its run in May 2019. The epic series was succeeded by its prequel, House of the Dragon in 2022, and just two seasons in, the prequel has broken a franchise streak that has stood for 14 years. The original series has earned itself a place in Emmy history, with a total of 59 awards from 164 nominations. This makes it one of the most successful TV shows the awards have ever seen.

However, for the first time in nearly a decade and a half, House of the Dragon Season 2 is the first season in the Westeros-based franchise not to be nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. The prequel series also missed out on the acting, directing, and writing categories too. While the series missed out on the major categories, it earned nods in the technical categories for the Creative Arts awards. These include Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes – “The Burning Mill”, Outstanding Period Or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Hairstyling – “Smallfolk”, Outstanding Period Or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) – “The Red Dragon and the Gold”, Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup – “The Red Sowing”, Outstanding Title Design, and Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Season Or A Movie.

House of the Dragon‘s Emmy nominations and its lack of presence in the big hitters isn’t much of a surprise. After a first season which was mostly well-received, it did land an Outstanding Drama Series nomination and ended with an exciting cliffhanger. Season 2 of the prequel series endured quite a backlash for its creative choices, storytellling and pacing. Its cliffhanger ending wasn’t viewed in a positive light either.

‘House of the Dragon’ Has Drawn the Ire of Lord Martin

The entirety of HBO’s Game of Thrones franchise is based on the written works of fantasy author, George R.R. Martin. The author of A Song of Ice and Fire has been involved in developing his books into shows for the streamer. However, the acclaimed author has been quite critical of late regarding how House of the Dragon has adapted his book, Fire & Blood. Martin was very vocal with his displeasure regarding how the second season of the show handled the Blood and Cheese storyline. Given he is the mind from which all things Westeros flows, his take on these matters carries significant weight. In a recent blog post, the author detailed yet another part of the franchise that has displeased him:

“The Targaryen sigil has two legs, as it should. Why would any Westerosi ever put four legs on a dragon, when they could look at the real thing and count their limbs? My wyverns have two legs as well; they differ from the dragons of my world chiefly in size, coloration, and the inability to breathe fire.”

All episodes of House of the Dragon are available to stream on HBO Max in the U.S.
