Michael Urie, Kumail Nanjiani, Jenn Harris to Join Jinkx Monsoon in Oh, Mary!
Cole Escola’s absurdist Broadway play is about to get an all-new cast.

They’ll be coming ’round the mountain! When Jinkx Monsoon steps into Mary Todd Lincoln’s hoop skirt August 4, she will do so with an (almost) entirely new supporting cast. Michael Urie (a newly minted 2025 Emmy nominee), Kumail Nanjiani (Marvel’s Eternals), and Jenn Harris (Elsbeth) will join the cast of the Cole Escola play. They will play Mary’s Teacher, Mary’s Husband, and Mary’s Chaperone, respectively. Tony Macht, who created the role of Mary’s Husband’s Assistant in the play’s Off-Broadway and Broadway bows, will continue with Monsoon, Urie, Nanjiani, and Harris through September 28.
The performances will mark Nanjiani and Harris’ Broadway debut. Both are known for their screen work; Nanjiani is an Oscar nominee for his work on The Big Sick while Harris’ other credits include American Fiction. Urie is a Broadway regular whose recent credits include Once Upon a Mattress and Spamalot.
The play’s original cast members Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, and Bianca Leigh, along with Tituss Burgess (the show’s current Mary Todd) will play their final performances August 2. Original cast member Tony Macht (who plays Mary’s Husband’s Assistant/Kyle) is staying with the show through September 28.
Oh, Mary! centers on famous First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In Escola’s demented take (or as press notes put it, “through the lens of an idiot”), Mary Todd becomes a madcap, cabaret-obsessed alcoholic.
The piece premiered at Off-Broadway’s Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2024 in a run that was extended three times. It then opened on Broadway last summer, where it’s been breaking box office at the Lyceum Theatre; it became the first show in the theater’s 121-year history to gross more than $1,000,000 in a single week.
The show earned two 2025 Tony Awards: Lead Actor in a Play for Cole Escola (who recently departed the play) and Director in a Play for Sam Pinkleton.
The play’s understudies are Hannah Solow, Martin Landry, and Julian Manjerico.
