Were Detroit Tigers snubbed for 2025 MLB All-Star Game?
On “Days of Roar,” Evan Petzold — joined by Scott Bentley of “Locked On Tigers” — breaks down Detroit Tigers players in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game.
Five All-Star selections apparently wasn’t enough for the Detroit Tigers.
Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize has been named to the 2025 American League All-Star Team, marking the righty’s first All-Star selection. MLB made the announcement on social media in the afternoon on Friday, July 11, after reports earlier in the day he was expected to be added.
Mize is the sixth Tiger named to the 2025 AL All-Star team, joining second baseman Gleyber Torres, outfielder Riley Greene, outfielder Javier Báez, pitcher Tarik Skubal and utility player Zach McKinstry.
Mize’s selection means the Tigers have now tied the franchise record for most All-Stars in a season and marks the first time since 2013 that the Tigers have sent six players to an All-Star game, when Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Torii Hunter, Jhonny Peralta, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander all represented Detroit at Citi Field in New York. This is also the fourth time the Tigers have sent six players to an All-Star Game, joining the 1984, 1985 and 2013 teams.
Mize has been one of the most productive pitchers on a first-place Tigers team, running a 2.63 ERA over 85⅔ innings through 15 starts. His ERA ranks him eighth among AL pitchers with at least 80 innings pitched, while his nine wins put him in a tie for third place among AL pitchers.
For Mize, it represents a hard-fought milestone through a turbulent first few years of his professional career. As the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, Mize struggled to live up to expectations, putting up a productive 2021 season (7-9, 3.71 ERA in 150⅓ innings pitched) in his first full MLB year. However, he was halted with an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery on June 15, 2022, that forced him to miss the rest of the 2022 season and the entire 2023 season.
Mize returned to the mound on April 4, 2024, hoping to become a big part of the Tigers rotation. He couldn’t quite return to his form, however, giving up multiple earned runs in 10 of his first 12 appearances and was eventually left off the ALDS roster without making a postseason appearance.
The 2025 season has been a completely different story for the righty, however.
Mize has put up a career-best strikeout rate (7.7 per nine innings), a career-low FIP (3.79) and is on track to beat his career marks in innings pitched and strikeouts. His nine wins have already equaled the total he registered in his first four seasons as he’s emerged as one of the most effective middle-of-the-rotation starters in baseball.
Mize was put on the 15-day IL on May 10 with a hamstring strain but returned to action on May 24, pitching five solid innings against the Cleveland Guardians in a 7-5 extra-inning loss. Mize got his revenge against the Guardians in his most recent start, however, throwing seven shutout innings in a 1-0 victory on July 5, arguably his best performance of the year.
Tigers starters are third in the AL in FanGraphs’ version of wins above replacement (8.7), and Mize is a big reason why. Just a little over halfway through the season, Mize has already matched his 2024 fWAR (1.3) and is second among all Tigers pitchers in Baseball Reference’s version of WAR (1.9).
The 2025 MLB All-Star Game takes place on Tuesday, July 15 at Truist Park in Atlanta (8 p.m. ET, Fox).
