It’s been called “the most underrated crime drama”, so it’s only right that Prime Video’s Bosch is being given a new lease of life with its very own sequel, Ballard. Detective Harry Bosch is returning to advise a strong new lead detective, Renée Ballard (played by Maggie Q), who faces dangerous conspiracies and life-threatening dangers. Whether you’re a diehard Bosch fan or simply enjoy a good crime thriller, the near-perfect drama is one to add to your watch lust.
The new series sees Detective Renée Ballard put in charge of the cold cases department, staffed by a team of volunteers. While the move is technically a career setback, Detective Ballard tackles “the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination” explains the synopsis. But, the deeper she digs, the higher the stakes rise and the faster the past threatens to overwhelm her.
With the series now available to binge in full, here’s everything you need to know about it before you tune in, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.
What is Ballard about?

Ballard is a sequel to Bosch, the much-loved crime thriller set in the Los Angeles Police Department. Bosch followed former special forces officer turned murder detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) as he solved chilling mysterious and uncovered dark conspiracies. The show began in 2014 and ran for seven series, with the finale airing in 2021.
Now, new crime thriller, Ballard, continues the story, this time centred around Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) who runs a volunteer team in the LAPD’s underfunded cold case department. Now retired, Harry Bosch joins her efforts to tackle the crimes that have been all but forgotten by everyone else, in a bid to finally bring justice.

But as Ballad gets deeper into the truth behind crimes spanning decades, she uncovers “a dangerous conspiracy with the LAPD”. Detective Ballard must navigate “personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.”
The action-packed trailer hints at mysteries in Ballard’s past, as one character says to her, “Kind of funny that you’re working with cold cases. You’ve got a few to deal with yourself.” Meanwhile, it looks like the cases of the past have found their way to the present, as danger catches up with the detective. “We might have a serial killers on our hands,” she says, followed by a chilling scene of someone handcuffed and shots of ‘coffins’ containing teddy bears.
