Steven McBee, the head of the McBee family, pleaded guilty to one count of federal crop insurance fraud in November 2024. By pleading guilty in federal court, Steven “admitted that he engaged in fraudulent activity from 2018 to 2020 that caused an economic loss to the U.S. Department of Agriculture,” according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Missouri.
Steven had reportedly submitted fraudulent documents underreporting his corn crop and soybean crop totals in 2018, resulting in him receiving more than a combined $3 million in federal crop insurance subsidies and federal crop insurance premium subsidies.
He now faces a sentence of up to 30 years in federal prison without parole, and owes the government more than $3 million. Steven’s sentencing will be held on September 9, 2025, according to DTN.
Steven McBee admits to “failure in judgement” at the McBee Farm & Cattle Co.
Steven’s sons, Steven McBee Jr. and Jesse McBee, took to their podcast, Meet the McBees, in November 2024, where they addressed the plea and read Steven’s statement about the charges.
“I entered a plea agreement to address crop insurance issues with farming operations back in 2018 through 2020,” Jesse read from Steven. “I personally accept responsibility as the buck stops with me.”
“I will always acknowledge a failure in judgement and action, just like I will always celebrate our McBee team when it comes to enjoying success,” he continued. “From our first generation family farm to all our other McBee family ventures, we are committed to conducting business the right way. The high standards we satisfy now in 2024, will continue to guide McBee endeavors and projects moving forward.”

Steven McBee Jr. opens up about his dad’s legal issues
During the podcast episode, Steven Jr. addressed the legal issues himself. “Our dad did go to court last week and entered a guilty plea on one count of causing false submission to the crop insurance program,” he said. “Allegations date back to 2018-2019 era, which seems like an absolute lifetime ago for our farming operation and how far we’ve come.”
Steven Jr. spoke with The New York Post on June 27, where he revealed that their dad’s legal issues have “made us come closer together as a family.”
“It is a real-life situation that we were dealing with throughout filming Season 2,” he said. “Obviously, right now, we’re still dealing with it.”
“Anyone who knows us on a personal or professional level sees how hard we work, sees the real businesses, the real jobs we provide,” he added.
Steven McBee Jr. reveals McBee Farm & Cattle Co.’s debt
On the Season 2 premiere of The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys, Steven Jr. shared his concerns about the finances of the family business.
“In the financial state of the farm, we’re leveraged out,” he said. “We’ve got close to $70 million in debt, between the payroll, meat facility, seed [and] fertilizer, fulfillment center, vehicles, fuels, [equipment] repair, cattle [feed], utilities, insurance, [cattle] medicine, attorneys. It keeps me up at night. We could lose our entire company immediately.”
