Smith Gilbert Named Team USA’s Coach For World Athletics Championships

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert will be the head coach of the USA women’s team at the coming World Athletics Championships.
 
Smith Gilbert, who recently completed her fourth season leading the Bulldogs program, will head up the women’s squad and be responsible for the sprint and hurdle events.  The World Championships will be in Tokyo on Sept. 13-21 and are expected to feature an array of future, current and former Bulldogs on a variety of squads from across the world.
 
Also of note, former Bulldog thrower Kibwe Johnson will be the men’s head coach and responsible for the throws and UGA graduate and former Athletic Association trainer Harris Patel will be on the staff. 
 
Smith Gilbert recently earned her third National Women’s Coach of the Year after also garnering the honor twice before during her time at USC (2018, 2021).  The Georgia women followed up their first Southeastern Conference outdoor title in 19 years with the program’s first NCAA women’s outdoor championship on June 14.  Since Smith Gilbert’s arrival in Athens, her teams have produced 12 top-10 national team finishes, including six top-five marks.
