NEW YORK (WABC) — Two buses crashed at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on Wednesday morning, causing buses to be rerouted and leading to a traffic backup.
The crash happened at around 6:15 a.m. on the 4th floor of the bus terminal on a ramp going into the Port Authority. It was blocking an inbound bus lane from the Lincoln Tunnel.
“One bus made contact with the rear of the other bus,” said Deputy Chief Jason Saffon, FDNY EMS.
Twelve people suffered non-life-threatening injuries on the buses.
The driver of one of the buses apparently had to be extricated and suffered moderate injuries.
“It required some extrication, meaning they had to use some equipment to free the patient,” Saffon said.
He added that it was tough for rescue workers to access the scene of the crash.
“We initially had some difficulty getting up the ramp, because it backed traffic up behind it,” Saffon said. “But we worked with the Port Authority police to open up the exit ramp so we could go up the wrong way and get our ambulances up there.”
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
NJ Transit bus service traveling to and from the New York Port Authority Bus Terminal is being diverted to Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station and Hoboken Terminal.
NJT bus tickets and passes are being cross-honored by NJT rail and PATH trains at Hoboken, Newark Penn Station and 33rd Street New York.
