LAS VEGAS — The Philadelphia 76ers made two selections in the 2025 NBA draft including the selection of big man Johni Broome with the No. 35 overall pick in Round 2. Broome, a decorated collegiate player, is looking to earn his stripes in the league as he takes steps forward as a player.
In five summer league games thus far, Broome is averaging 9.0 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting 42.1% from deep. He’s only shooting 36.4% from the floor overall, but he is continuing to work and find his niche on the floor in an effort to improve and take steps forward in his rookie year.
“Johni’s had some good moments,” President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey stated. “I think he’s getting adjusted to the speed of the game. Obviously, he played in a very good conference in the SEC and faced a lot, but the NBA is one more level.”
Morey isn’t wrong. The speed of the game in the NBA is much different than it is in college. Even in a tough conference like the SEC, Broome will have to make that adjustment to the NBA. In that same breath, that’s what summer league is for. It’s all about making sure younger players are in the best position to succeed and prepare for that next level.
“I feel confident he’ll figure it out,” Morey added. “Probably one or two of the games have been really good, and then one or two, I’m sure he would say ‘Hey that wasn’t my best game’, but he’s on a four-year deal. We feel like he’s gonna be someone who can contribute over time. If your second-round pick is contributing in year 1, you’re in a really good spot. Hopefully, he can get there, but I know he’s got the right attitude and approach to do the work that’s required to get over there.”
It will be interesting to see how Broome continues to develop. The Sixers could use another big man and he fits the mold of what they’re looking for in terms of youth and his rebounding skills. He has the talent and the work ethic to get it done.
